My goodness, I have never met hummingbirds like the ones in our backyard (If you can meet hummingbirds?!) They are very people friendly and inquisitive. The other morning Mike was out looking at the hummingbird feeder because it was empty and he wanted to see if the bees were still hanging around. And while he was looking at the feeder, it a hummy (as we like to call them), flew up and hovered about 12 inches from his head and looked at the empty feeder with my husband, then it apparently turned and looked at him as if to say "Don't just stand there buddy, fill it up!"
I had a similar experience when we first moved here. I was standing out back and had one fly up, hover around my head as if to see who the new neighbors in town were. My Dad "help raise to tiny hummingbird babies, "Bivo & Tivo" and he is sure they still come around to visit, I'm sure they do to!
The hummy's here are all so unique to each other, they do not all look alike but have very unique shimmery colors, some look like they are wearing caps, they just seem to have a lot of character and personality.
Another agent told me a story about a friend of his who would sit out on his patio with a red cap on and a local hummy got in the habit of coming in and sitting on the bill of his cap on a regular basis, even when there were others around. One day the agent put his friend's cap on and when the hummingbird came around, it stopped and hovered, took a look at the agent's face and realized it was not his usual human "friend" and took off.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure we are humanizing them way to much here, but they sure are fun and interesting. I believe that amongst themselves they are very aggressive and territorial. I guess I'm glad that they are our friends ;)
Please feel free to share your hummingbird story here.
